Toy Chests

Toy chests can be a great instrument for organization and storage; however, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) they can also be the source of injuries and even death to young children. The most common cause of problems with toy chests is a hinged lid that can fall on children's limbs, heads, or necks, and even trap small children inside. Since 1984 legislation has been passed requiring toy chests have holes for ventilation and hinged lids to stay open and not latch, so that a child could not be trapped inside. Unfortunately, casualties have still occurred.

  • Playskool recalled over 3,000 toy chests due to screws that come loose. When these screws do not function properly the lid can collapse unexpectedly.
  • Pottery Barn recalled almost 6,000 toy chests after multiple reports of lid support failure.
  • Crate & Barrel recalled 7,000 of their toy chests for the same reason; the lid support can fail.
