The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children remain in booster seats until an adult seatbelt fits correctly. This is usually when a child is about 4'9” tall and is at least 8 years old. Ill-fitting seatbelts raise the risk of serious injury to children involved in car accidents. Some states have booster seat requirements that are less stringent, however we recommend following the recommendations of the AAP.
Older children who have surpassed the booster seat requirements are subject to the same protections and potential injuries from seatbelts as adults. While seatbelts protect vehicle occupants most of the time, injuries can happenfrom torn seat belts, defective lap belts, center position lap onlyseatbelts, inertial release separation of buckle, buckle failures, shoulder only belts, excessive shoulder belt slack, and automatic belt failures. Injuries resulting from these defects can range from minor injuries to severe life threatening head and spinal cord injuries.
Lap belt only seatbelts are particularly dangerous to children, and have caused significant injuries including: quadriplegia, paraplegia, traumatic brain injuries, and even death.Cars with lap only belts are dangerous and should be recalled. While the dangers of these types of seatbelts are widely known, not one manufacturer has recalled a vehicle to replace them with safer seatbelts. With thousands of vehicles with lap belt only seatbelts still on the road, the auto manufacturers have made a clear decision to put profits ahead of safety.
