Drowning Dangers

Of all children aged one to three years old, drowning is the number one cause of injury related death. For children under fifteen years old, this is the number two cause of injury related death. Surprisingly, ninety percent of all drownings suffered by children occur while being supervised by an adult. This alarming fact is most likely due to the fact that drowning deaths are quick and not heard. In the time it takes to quickly grab and answer a cell phone or a knock at the door, a young child in the water can lose consciousness after two minutes and endure irreversible brain damage in a time frame of four to six minutes. In addition poor supervision, defective products such as security gates near a pool that are meant to keep children out, and failure to maintain facilities, causes these tragedies to occur.

Where Child Drowning Incidents Most Commonly Occur:

  • Bathtubs
  • Buckets
  • Toilets
  • Swimming Pools (Residential and Public)
  • Spas, Hot Tubs, Jacuzzis
  • Landscape Ponds
  • Sinks

Safety Tips

There are a number of precautions that can be taken to prevent drownings. As stated previously, there can be no replacement for competent supervision. Additionally, accessibility to spas and pools should never be within reach of children by way of locked and/or latched gates, doors, and fences. Please remember that drain covers should be routinely checked in an effort to prevent hair entrapment. If one is missing, cracked, or appears to be broken in any way then it needs to be replaced immediately. Any and all rescue equipment should be kept near the pool. A common misconception is that flotation toys can be used as rescue equipment, however this is not true; they are just toys and should be treated as such. Cell phones should always be taken outside with you, and if you only rely on a house phone make sure that you use a cordless device so you are never forced to step inside to answer a ringing phone. Pool and spa covers should always be completely removed to ensure that no one could be trapped underneath while swimming. Children of all ages need to be supervised at all times. If supervision is not possible, it is a good idea to postpone swimming until someone is available to supervise. Knowledge is always crucial – anyone who has taken a CPR class can make the difference between life and death.
