Hazardous Clothing, Shoes, & Accessories

As harmless as certain types of clothing may appear to be, one must understand that this is not always the case. There are a number of hazardous products within the clothing market that can cause various injuries. In more severe occurrences, death can result from faulty or defective clothing. Most people would be surprised to learn that certain clothing can cause serious injury or death. Most commonly, the types of injuries that are suffered are the result of flammable fabrics/material (causing burns) or drawstrings (causing strangulation). The clothing industry should be held accountable for all instances involving any type of injury or death as the result of a hazardous product.

Dangerous Items on the Market

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is responsible for serving consumers in the prevention of death and injury as they coordinate with the manufacturers and retailers/sellers of children's clothing. Currently, some specific items can still be found in stores, while other items are worn by children on a daily basis.

  • Crocs Shoes attributed to escalator accidents; foot and toe injuries
  • Heely's Sneakers responsible for falls; head injuries, cuts, scrapes, broken bones
  • Jackets/Sweatshirts with drawstring at the neck or waist can cause either strangulation or entrapment
  • Children's Sunglasses, Jewelry, or other accessories may be in violation of lead paint standard

In terms of clothing that can be considered to be of high flammability, here are some recent recalls:

  • Fleece Sweatshirts sold at K-Mart
  • Children's Pajamas sold at Gap, Inc.
  • Hardwick Knitted Fabrics, Inc.; children's vests and pants/infant's shirts
  • Children's Sweatshirts sold at Target
  • Fashionique II, Inc.; children's scarves

**It is important to note that under the Flammable Fabrics Act, any fabric that burns faster than newspaper is extremely dangerous and should be recalled.
