Changing Tables

A simple concept, a piece of furniture designed for parents to lay their babies on while changing their diapers. The simplistic nature of this product, however, does not mean it is always safe. Doors, steps, and zippers that are designed to enhance the product have often been the cause of harm to children.

  • Childcraft Education Corp. had to recall 700 of its changing tables that have doors where children's fingers can easily become stuck between hinges.
  • Graco manufactures an elevated changing table designed for their “Pack ‘n Play” play yard. When the child is in the normal play area they can trap themselves between the railing of the play yard and the changing table, posing a threat of strangulation.
  • Kolcraft makes a play yard similar to Graco's, with a raised changing table that had to be recalled because of straps that hang from the changing table and caused one child's death.
