Causes of Broken Bones

Broken bones are medically referred to as bone fractures. The causes of bone fractures are various and plentiful. Bone fractures can be compared to such things as breaking a wooden pencil or a tree branch. Under strain, bones can bend and in instances where the pressure is too intense, bones can snap. Children are especially susceptible to this injury due to their active lifestyle. Virtually any sport and a number of activities that a child participates in can result in a broken bone. There is more than just one way for a bone to be fractured, ranging from hairline (the least severe) to open (the most severe and painful).

Types of Fractures

In certain cases, a doctor might be able to ascertain whether or not a bone is broken by simply looking at the injured area. In order to determine the type of fracture that has been suffered, an X-ray will take place. A complete fracture can be any of the following:

  • Closed Fracture: a fracture in which the skin is not broken
  • Open (aka compound) Fracture: a fracture that has the bone breaking through the skin; these types of fractures have a higher chance of infection
  • Non-displaced Fracture: the pieces on each side of the fracture are lined up
  • Displaced Fracture: the pieces on either side of the fracture are not in line; surgery could be necessary in this type of fracture before a cast is put on
  • Hairline Fracture: thin break in the bone
  • Single Fracture: bone is fractured in one spot
  • Segmental Fracture: bone is fractured in excess of two places within the same bone
  • Comminuted Fracture: bone is either crushed or is fractured into more than two pieces
