Bicycles/ Bikes

Bicycles have long been a great source of recreation for children. However, bicycles are responsible for more childhood injuries than all other products on the market, with the exception of the automobile. Nearly 30 million children ages 5-14 ride bikes, this accounts for 70 percent of ALL children in this age group. It must also be noted that nearly half of all bicycle-related injuries and deaths are suffered by children. A recent study has determined that bicycle handlebars can pose a serious health risk to children in causing pelvic or abdominal injuries. Faulty bicycle assembly must always be considered in regards to bicycle accidents resulting in injury or death.

  • Fisher-Price recalled about 5,000 mini bikes when it was determined that over inflation of the tires can cause the plastic rim within the wheel to break, resulting in tire rupture and therefore posing the risk of possible facial and/or hand injuries.
  • Marin Mountain Bikes recalled 1,000 aluminum-framed mountain bikes due to the possibility of breakage on the steer tube on the front of the bicycle, which can cause the rider to lose control and fall. There have already been reports of injuries including broken bones, broken teeth, cuts, and abrasions.
  • Haro Bicycle Corp. recalled 1,100 BMX freestyle bicycles due to a lack of space between the rider’s foot and the front wheel. The rider’s foot could possibly come into contact with the front wheel and cause the rider to lose control and suffer serious injury.
