Bath Seats

Bath time for children calls for adult supervision as well as good equipment. Since 1983 there are 96 reported drownings and 153 critical injuries caused by bath seats that were poorly made. Children can be harmed in three ways.

  • 1. Sliding through: the seat remains stationary while the baby comes out of it.
  • 2. Toppling: the seat falls over, on top of the baby trapping them underneath.
  • 3. Trapping: the fixated seat holds the baby in place while they are submerged by water.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) realizes that bath seats have been the cause of death and injury to children. They are raising the safety standards, however imperfect products still exist. Potential defects that have caused problems in the past were primarily due to the following: unreliable suction cups, fastening devices, leg openings that were too large or too small and unstable seats.
