ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles)

All Terrain Vehicles, commonly known as ATVs are used for both recreation purposes and rescue scenarios. They provide fast and simple access in off-road situations. The unfortunate fact is that each year there are a number of people, including children, who are injured in an accident involving an ATV. Because many states do not require a license for those who operate an ATV, children under the age of 16 are most likely to be injured when operating an ATV. Certain ATVs can weigh as much as 750 pounds and some have the ability to travel as fast as 75 mph.

  • About 40,000 ATVs were recalled by American Honda Motor Co. due to loss of speed control. Water can enter the throttle position sensor and then freeze, causing the throttle to stick open thus posing a serious risk of injury to the rider.
  • The defectively designed Yamaha Rhino ATV has caused hundreds of serious injuries due to high rate of rollovers. The injuries that follow a Rhino rollover are frequently fractures to legs, arms, collarbones wrists and ankles. Some limb injuries are so severe they even require amputation.
  • About 270 ATVs were recalled by KTM North America due to brake failure.
  • An Estimated 930 “Outlaw 525” ATVs were recalled by Polaris Industries Inc. due to fire hazard. The recalled ATVs may contain a loose fuel valve within the fuel tank, causing a potential fire hazard to riders.
