Airbags

There is no doubt that airbags and seat belts save lives. However, airbags can become dangerous when children sit in the front seat to close to the dashboard. Airbags open with an explosion equal to 2000 pounds of force at a speed of approximately 200 miles per hour. This force can kill or cause serious injuries to children sitting in the front seat, even if they are wearing a seatbelt.

Children are vulnerable to airbag injuries regardless of what the speed the vehicles involved in the accident were traveling at. Parents should not get a false sense of security if they drive a large vehicle. While it is true that larger vehicles have a larger mass and can provide greater protection than smaller cars, airbag injuries can occur in vehicles of all sizes. Airbags deploy at similar speeds and with similar forces in most vehicles.

Children sitting in the front seat are at risk of severe head and neck injuries, if the airbag is deployed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 144 children have died from air bag related injuries since 1990. In addition to head and neck injuries, children can suffer lacerations, burns, hearing loss, and other serious injuries from airbags.

How to Avoid Children's Airbag Injuries:

  • Children, 12 and under should always ride properly restrained in the rear seat.
  • Under no circumstances should infants ride in the front seat of a vehicle with a passenger side airbags.
  • Children should always be in the back seat, properly restrained by a seatbelt or car seat. If this is not possible, a passenger side airbag on/off switch may be installed to shut off the front seat passenger side airbag.
  • Car seats should be pushed back as far as possible in the back seat.
  • The safest position for a child safety seat is in the middle of the back seat.
